SMART RAIL MOUNTED TRANSMITTER / CONDITIONER SEM220 and SEM230
|
INTRODUCTION
Smart transmitters provide better accuracy
and stability than their analog counterparts, greater flexibility and
the ability to interface with a Personal Computer or Process control
System. This means that sensors and ranges can be changed
without the need for re-calibration or jumper changes.
The SEM220
& SEM230 Smart DIN Rail
Transmitters provide current output (or a voltage by the addition of
an external resistor) from any of the common industrial sensors.
All versions feature isolation from the power supply
and input to output isolation.
The SEM230
can have an optional dual relay alarm, and the SEM230XM
is a version with FM approval for use with sensors in
hazardous areas without the use of barriers.
ACCURACY and
STABILITY
The are micro-processor based and
feature automatic self calibration of span and zero which results in
excellent short and long term accuracy and repeatability.
Linearization is performed digitally to ensure drift free performance.

SEM220 LOW COST SMART TRANSMITTER / CONDITIONER
BENEFITS
The SEM220 is a 'SMART'
Transmitter/Conditioner that accepts any of the common industrial sensors and
provides isolation between input, output and power supply. It also accepts
a wide range of current and voltage inputs.
TEST
The SEM220 is
micro-processor based and features automatic self calibration of span and zero
which results in excellent short and long term accuracy and repeatability.
All linearization is performed digitally to ensure drift free performance.
These feature assure a high degree of confidence in the correct operation of the
instrument together with a low cost of ownership.
PROGRAMMING
Programming is achieved by means of a host computer via an SEM200 interface
cable to a connector on the front face of the unit. Programming is by
simple menu selections presented on the host screen. Sensors and ranges
can be changed without the need for re-calibration or jumper changes.
RS232 capability is provided.
CALIBRATION
The unit is supplied factory calibrated. Calibration data is stored in
EEPROM, field recalibration is possible although this is not normally necessary
for 5 years.
SYSTEM HEALTHY
A green front panel LED flashes periodically to indicate system health (OK).
A steady LED indicates that an error condition has been detected. LED off
indicates a loss of power. A fast 'flash' indicates the sensor is under or
over range.
SEM230 EVEN SMARTER TRANSMITTER / CONDITIONER
BENEFITS
In addition to all the features of the SEM220,
the SEM230 offers the
following additional feature:
TEST
The design incorporates a WATCHDOG and a programmable safety condition (0 to
100%). In the event of an input out of limits, or input failure, or if an
error is detected and the transmitter is unable to continue to function
satisfactorily, the transmitter goes to the safety condition, and the system
health LED is switched permanently on. If the input is over or under
range, the LED flashes at a faster rate. In practical terms it is not
possible to guarantee that all potential types of error will result in fail safe
operation. It is therefore recommended that standard process control
procedures are followed; that in critical applications a secondary back up
system is employed.
ALARM RELAYS
Alarm relays can be supplied as an option. These are two individual relays
with a common connection and each may be configured independently as a high, low
or deviation alarm. An additional feature enables the relays to be used as
system healthy alarms. Each relay has an associated LED which is
illuminated to show the alarm state.
ISOLATION
The input, output and communications circuits are fully isolated from each other
to 500 VAC rms. All circuits are isolated from the power supply to 1.5 kV.
HAZARDOUS AREAS
Two versions of the SEM230
are available, the SEM230
for general applications and the SEM230XM
for hazardous area applications. Although both versions need to be mounted
in a safe area, the SEM230XM
has an isolated and intrinsically safe 'front end' which means that sensors can
be connected directly into the hazardous area WITHOUT BARRIERS, full isolation
is maintained between inputs and outputs.
The IS approval is by FM and BASSEEFA [EEx ia] IIC and sensors can be mounted in
Class I, II, III, Div 1, GPS A-G. The alarm relay option can also be used
provided two independent trips from a hazardous area sensor.
PROGRAMMING
Programming is achieved using a standard PC via a connector on the front face of
the unit. RS485 multi-drop comms is standard, enabling 32 x SEM230s to be
connected together without any additional interface. Up to 99 units may be
added to the network with suitable buffering. Programming is by simple
menu selections presented on the host screen.
REMOTE DISCRETE INPUTS
The SEM230 can accept two
external dry contacts (or logical inputs) that may be used to reset or inhibit
alarms and reset peak/valley memories respectively.
