  Description

The Pulsar Guard 200x series products are non-invasive ultrasonic sensors designed to detect process activity by listening to the variations in ultrasonic energy produced.

Application

This sensor was specifically designed for use in the oil industry, there was a demand for detecting sand produced by the process of oil extraction. This sensor is particularly good at rejecting flow noise in multi phase situations.

Due to the way in which this sensor is mounted it is particularly suitable for attaching to pipe work. It can detect the presence of particles in a liquid or whether solids are flowing. The sensor is best fitted just after a bend where the acoustic activity tends to be highest.

Operation

The Pulsar Guard series 200x sensors all work on the same basic principle, the product contains a piezo ceramic crystal that gives an electrical output depending on the minute vibrations caused by ultrasonic activity. A sensitive amplifier increases the signal from the crystal element and this is then enveloped to give a smoothed version of the high frequency signal. The output is a varying voltage ( 0 to 5V ) with a time constant of 100uS.
